Award Categories and Definitions
Education, Training and Public Awareness
Nominations in this category must show originality in educating and training people which results in significant environmental improvements to the use and application of transportation. Awards will be made for the creation and delivery of educational materials which cause the recipients to reduce material and energy consumption in the transportation industry, innovative training of service technicians which results in an environmental improvement or for innovative efforts in modifying public behavior which results in measurable and reduced environmental impacts.
New Methods and Tools
Nominations in this category must be able to demonstrate that the method and/or tool is innovative and part of a process that has led to an increase in environmental savings, as well as a reduction in overall environmental impact. Demonstration of the requirements can include publications, applications, and widespread adoption by the transportation industry. Results from a life cycle analysis should be included whenever possible.
Mobile Energy and Emissions
Nominations in this category must demonstrate innovations in fuel source, fuel savings, CO2 reduction and energy use reduction in transportation. Similarly, it must demonstrate innovations that reduce mobile source emissions through design improvements, source reduction or control efficiency. Demonstrated innovations include publications, applications and widespread use of the innovation that confirms energy use efficiency improvements or emissions reduction on a life cycle basis.
Stationary Energy and Emissions and Process Innovations
Nominations in this category must demonstrate the implementation of a cost-effective, innovative alternative product or process through design improvements, source reduction or control that reduces the amount of energy and/or the amount of emissions to air, water or land from a stationary source resulting in reduced environmental impact. The approach must have the capability to be applied to other facilities or products and result in the same or better performance at those facilities or in those products. Demonstrated innovations include publications, applications and widespread use of the innovation that confirms energy use efficiency improvements or emissions reduction on a life cycle basis.
Recycling, Reuse, Remanufacturing
Nominations in this category must show innovative reuse or remanufacturing of a part or innovative recycling of a material in a production application in the transportation industry. Examples can include: the innovative reuse of end of life transportation parts that reduces landfill burden and energy usage, innovative remanufacturing of a part that has not been remanufactured before, recycling of materials into new applications or recycling materials on a scale that has not been achieved before.
Service, Maintenance and Logistics
Nominations in this category must demonstrate environmental achievement in the areas of servicing, providing maintenance and the supporting field services of the transportation industry products including aircraft, ground vehicles and marine vehicles. Such achievement might include developing and implementing new service procedures which reduce the production of waste fluids, development of new repair techniques that require fewer and lower volume replacement parts, the development of techniques which make use of worn but serviceable parts and the design and execution of a new parts distribution system which significantly reduces the energy and materials consumed in transportation.
Materials Development and Usage
Nominations in this category must demonstrate an achievement in material innovation, material improvement and energy reduction. Any improvements must indicate balance in the impact the new material has on the environment, community, worker and energy use.
Noise Management Innovations
Nominations in this category must make significant achievements in reducing noise or improving noise management from land vehicles, aircraft or watercraft. This is intended to be a broad category that will include noise impacts on vehicle occupants, employees, neighbors or communities. The category will include submissions from the air, land and sea areas. Achievements need to be measurable improvements in technology procedures, measurement methodology, public awareness or in understanding the science and engineering of transportation noise. Nominations need to include a qualitative assessment of how this measurable result has positively impacted people or the environment and how the information is publicly shared.
